Meet Zeni

Born in Belize in 1957, Zeni's family moved to Errington when she was young. "I attended school in Errington then in Grade 10 and 11, I attended school in Belize and Mexico, returning home to graduate from Qualicum Senior Secondary in 1974.

My parents, father Ben, a writer, and my mother Blanche, a school teacher/artist, had a great interest in the world around them. Their interest provided we seven children, five boys and two girls, with an opportunity to travel, live and study in other countries.

"The driving force moving me forward is the commitment I have for ending the cycle of poverty in our nation."

Political discussions started early in our family. I recall canvassing for Bob Skelly (4 term NDP MLA and 1 term MP) with my father at the age of 13, and being included in discussions when Tommy Douglas came to dinner.

I have passed on my interest in social justice to my two children, Demitri Telfair, 26, an English teacher in Taiwan, and Zeni Telfair, 24, a University of Victoria student.

"My strengths include communication, conflict resolution, and leadership skills."

Educated as a Chartered Insurance Professional, I was instrumental in unionizing what is now Coastal Community Insurance; where I served as Shop Steward and a member of the negotiating team. I was also elected Recording Secretary for OPEIU (Local 195)  and delegate to the Nanaimo/Duncan District Labour Council. These experiences taught me valuable people skills.

I have worked on municipal, provincial and federal election campaigns since 1970.

"I was elected School Trustee - District 68 - in 1996, serving until 1999."
